Class action lawsuits are legal avenues that allow a group of people, who have suffered similar damages from a common defendant, to come together.
Sometimes these settlements result in minor compensations like a $1.10 check that may not even seem worth depositing. But lately, there have been several settlements that are worth your time to claim.
If there aren't enough claimants, sometimes judges rule that the settlement money is returned to the companies. In response, attorneys are now making settlements more meaningful and substantial.
According to a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) study, out of 562 cases sampled, only 13% of resolved class action lawsuits resulted in some benefit for class members. Even when the case settles in favor of the plaintiffs, the impact is often minor. The same study found that the average award to consumers is only $32, while plaintiffs’ lawyers take home nearly $1 million on average.
